Rounds the top outer edge off instead of leaving it cut square. A square edge on a body that is still growing at the top is what makes a profile end in a hard lip, so a millimetre or two here is usually what a shape is missing.

How much of the pocket the fins wall themselves. At 0 the core runs the full height and the candle sits in a smooth bored well. Take it up to the pocket depth and the core stops at the candle's base, so the well is made by the fins with the slots left open between them — which is how the ones in the shops are built, and why they glow at the candle's own level. The wax is in a metal cup, so there is nothing for the slots to let out.
